BizBits: sQuba

OK, so the Swiss have invented a car that runs on land and underwater. But did they really have to make it a convertible? It’s called the “sQuba,” and conjures up memories of James Bond’s amphibious Lotus Esprit from “The Spy Who Loved Me.” That fictional vehicle traveled on land and, when chased by bad guys in a helicopter, plunged into the water and became an airtight submarine — complete with “torpedoes” and “depth charges.”

But “Q” isn’t responsible for this one.

The concept car — which unlike Bond’s is not armed — was developed by Swiss designer Rinspeed Inc. and is set to make a splash at the Geneva Auto Show next month.

Company CEO Frank Rinderknecht, a self-professed Bond fan, said he has been waiting 30 years to recreate the car he saw Roger Moore use to drive off of a dock.

Latin's Chadwick tested again

Saturday night, when Charlotte Latin nearly upset private school state champion Christ School, the Hawks' best player was sitting at the end of the bench.

Junior David Chadwick was wearing a blue nylon jacket and khaki pants. In the ninth grade, he suffered his second severe knee injury in two years. He repeated the grade (family decision) and took nearly two years to get to 100 percent.

Over the summer, he worked with a former Charlotte Hornets trainer.

Chadwick, who has scholarship offers from Charlotte and James Madison, also was at Latin three times a day, for two 90-minute skills sessions plus scrimmage time.

Thicker and stronger, Chadwick -- whose father, also named David, played for Dean Smith at North Carolina from 1968 through '71 -- had morphed into a totally different player when the 2007-08 season began in November.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Fun Flicks From The Grammys!

You know, if you look at the history of America and you do a lil' reading...you will see that nothing is above this government. Its very simple. In the 60s, they had Cointelpro, which was by design to create dissention, mistrust and infighting btw Black progressive and nationalist groups. They also killed at will. Look at what happened with the Black Panthers. Skipping a lot of history, but look at what happened with Pac and Biggie. If you think that was an East / West feud that killed them, i have some land in Antartica to sell you. We know have Police Units to follow and profile rappers. You think all of these busts are clean? Nah, B. YOU are the naive fool if you think that rappers are THAT dumb. I'm speaking in general terms with regard to TI. I think and know rappers have to be smarter, but I wouldnt put anything above US law officials.

When you see a guy in the train tracks like that, you don't need to take three, four steps to increase your speed before you hit the guy," said Toronto's Boyd Devereaux, who made a comeback after being told in 2000 his career was over because of a concussion.

Campbell, who acts as the NHL's disciplinarian, cites an interesting discussion with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren after one of numerous transgressions by his players.

"I said, `Homer, he was hitting to hurt him,'" recalled Campbell. "He said, `Well, don't we hit to hurt?' I said, `I'm not so sure. That's a good question.'"

Yet Campbell calls the lack of respect theory "a crock."

"I just think that that's overblown and the players who say it don't understand," he said. "Players are competitive.

Optimism rampant -- and often unfounded -- in NASCAR's short offseason

The short offseason is a wonderful time for NASCAR's Sprint Cup teams, one in which all things seem possible. Petty Enterprises is winless since 1999, but vice president of operations Robbie Loomis is undaunted. "To be honest with you, I think we'll win in the first eight races (of 2008)," Loomis said during the recent Sprint Media Tour in North Carolina. Toyota's winless Cup debut last year doesn't concern two-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, whose Joe Gibbs Racing team, including teammates Denny Hamlin and newcomer Kyle Busch, switched to Toyota from Chevrolet — winner of 26 of the 36 Cup races in 2007. "It's not a Toyota issue, it's just getting a handle on the CoT," Stewart said, referring to the Car of Tomorrow that will be used for the entire 2008 schedule. "We'll be fine. I don't see any reason why we can't all win races this year." Ford managed just seven victories last season, and Dodge had just three, with only one drive —Kurt Busch — in the 12-man Chase.
