| Blunt warning to Turkey from Rehn
The intention of the S-G and President Papadopoulos to continue their efforts to speed up the search for a comprehensive Cyprus settlement deserved every support, the Russian FM added. Two American Congressmen, Michael Bilirakis (Rep.-Florida) and Carolyn Maloney (Dem-New York) issued a joint statement hailing the Annan-Papadopoulos agreement on the resumption of bicommunal discussions. They said the government proposal for the reopening of Famagusta port under joint administration and under EU auspices, would permit the communities to work together to further enhance trade opportunities. Applaud The government has also called for the return of the original Greek Cypriot inhabitants to the adjacent fenced off "ghost" city of Varosha, which has been deserted since coming under the control of the Turkish invasion army in August 1974.
Denver-based team to have two cars in Daytona 500
Nemechek was 12th in the 60-lap race. Brian Vickers finished 11th to claim the second transfer spot available in the race for the drivers who were not guaranteed position in Sunday's Great American race. “Besides my wife and my children, this moment right now is the greatest time in my life," Wallace said. “This is the 50th annual Daytona 500, the biggest sporting event in the United States right now, and I raced myself into it." Wallace drove for FRR for a while last season but was asked to exit the driver's seat so the team could try other drivers. Nemechek, nicknamed Front Row Joe because of his ability to qualify which FRR has to do because it is out of the Top 35 in owner's points, signed a two-year contract to drive the No. 78 Impala this season. “It's a special day," Nemechek said.
Production notes
Ivan [Reitman] encouraged me to play Jenny as broadly as possible, and to take the risk of making the character seem like a fool." At first glance -- or first date -- Jenny appears to be quite a "catch"; after all, she's a vivacious, vibrant, and beautiful woman. But, as Reitman notes, it doesn't take long for the story's protagonist, Matt Saunders, to realize that there's something "off" about Jenny. "She's a very verbal person," says the director. "Basically, she talks too much and hasn't yet learned the fine art of self-censorship." Jenny is too much -- way too much -- to handle for a regular guy like Matt. Matt, played by Luke Wilson, is a successful architect who, like most single people (including future girlfriend-from hell Jenny), is looking for love. He is the story's straight man and, says Reitman, the heart of the film.
After leap breaks body, a miracle renews spirit
On the evening of Sept. 28, at an apartment complex in King of Prussia, a tragedy and a miracle occurred 2.5 seconds apart. The tragedy took place when Jordan Burnham, 18, a senior just nominated to the homecoming court at Upper Merion High School, jumped out his ninth-floor window. The miracle happened 90 feet below, when he hit the ground at 50 m.p.h. - and survived. Jordan has no recollection of going out the window. Even though he was suffering from depression, neither he nor anyone close to him ever expected him to do something so impulsive, so lethal. "I had everything to live for," he says now. Today, 114 days later, Jordan's body remains badly broken. With the help of three therapists, he stood on his right leg last week for 60 seconds.
Time running out, admits Megson
But we are looking to get another forward into the football club. But, just like everybody else, we are running out of time. Eidur would have fit the bill, but unfortunately he's at a huge football club and he wants to stay there." Full story in Wednesday's The Bolton News .
The rise and fall of Isuzu shows value of R&D
There's a meaty master's thesis in the rise and fall of Isuzu in the United States, dealing with how a promising, moderately vital brand was botched to the point where, in less than a year, Isuzu will be gone from these shores. Knowing how busy some of you overtaxed MBA students are, I'll help with an outline, as I am, if nothing else, Your Full-Service Automotive Columnist. Isuzu -- Japanese for "fifty bells pealing in harmony and celebration" -- built Japan's first truck in 1918, and four years later, began building cars. Isuzu's core business became medium-duty trucks, and that's still true. In 1971, though, a marketing agreement with General Motors caused the little manufacturer to venture outside Japan, and Isuzu began building the compact LUV pickup truck for Chevrolet, and the Opel for Buick.
