A family affair

As it happens, her birthday falls, appropriately, on Valentine's Day, February 14. And while the notion of "a sweetheart" has long since been reclaimed by pragmatism and the (considerable) pleasure and (occasional) pain of a long-term relationship, we are mutually united each Valentine's Day by manic affection for our first-born. Love is in the air.

The Main Stage opens its 80th season with a revival of George Bernard Shaw's fast-paced, thought-provoking 1894 comedy, Candida, which was first performed in Stockbridge in 1928 during the Berkshire Playhouse's inaugural season. Set in London's East End during the Victorian era, Candida is about the domestic turmoil that ensues when a dashing and sensitive young poet comes between a socially progressive minister and his charismatic wife.

Obama is worth big spending

He's going all the way to the White House, unless they gun him down,'' said Uncle Chet. ``And I do lose sleep over that. It seems too much like '68, with the war and the crowds and Bobby Kennedy. Actually, Bobby was the first candidate I ever sent money to.''

``Have you sent Obama any?'' asked Hon.

``I did. Fifty smackers.''

``Is a smacker a dollar?'' asked Buddy.

``Yes,'' I said as Hon served chicken, potatoes, salad and bread.

``This looks wonderful,'' said Alice, who took a drumstick.

``First, I bought the hat,'' said Uncle Chet. ``But later I was thinking, I don't care if I get a good deal on a hat; I want to help this guy get elected. So I hit the credit card again.''

``Last of the big spenders,'' I said.

From San Diego's favorite son ... to spoilsport

The most intriguing at-bat of 2007 is leaking into 2008. You can sense it by the way a 25-year-old wannabe struts through his February workouts. You can sense it by the way a 40-year-old shoulder shrugs at the line of questioning. You can sense it by the way a Hall of Famer is uncomfortably stuck in the middle. And you can sense it by the way a filthy rich man stares into space.

On Sept. 29, 2007, Tony Gwynn Jr., for all practical purposes, knocked Tony Gwynn Sr.'s team out of the playoffs. But it's much crueler than that. He did it with two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the ninth -- against his Uncle Trevor. He did it with the champagne on ice and the Colorado Rockies on life support. He did it against the franchise that clothed and fed him and against a fan base that, 81 days a year, walks down Tony Gwynn Drive to the turnstiles.

Windies make mincemeat of minnows

Former Indian opener Anshuman Gaekwad today criticised coach Greg Chappells tendency to experiment and putting too much faith in juniors, even though he said the hosts had the potential to win the ICC Champions Trophy.

Sachin Tendulkar may be blazing runs like he did in his prime but the batting superstar says he has not effected any change in his batting style which is dictated by the requirement of the team on a particular day.

February 2007 Archives

To be honest, I just feel like how much more can anyone say about her? And I guess I'm a softie when I see someone get so slammed by everybody in the world. Don't get me wrong, I fully enjoy participating in ragging on stupid antics of celebrities, but sometimes I can't help but reach a saturation point. She's a wacko with tons of problems right now, no doubt, but that sentimental (or wimpy, you choose) part of me wants her to get it together and make a huge comeback. Psssst! I even want her to get back with J.T. Shhh...

Suzy: Beats the hell outta K-Fed! But let's just let her get her hair back first.

THE FRONT ROW with Jerry Hitchcock

NASCAR enters 2008 with a "back to basics" mantra. But for the Sprint Cup (get used to it -- NEXTEL Cup is long gone) teams, none of them moved backwards -- they're all moving forward. No one stands still in the series anymore, lest they fall by the wayside (case in point, the Morgan-McClure team, which closed its operations recently due to lack of sponsorship dollars after 23 seasons and three Daytona 500 wins). This year's 500, which takes place on Sunday, will feature big teams getting bigger, what with merger mania striking the premier stock car series in the latter part of last season and throughout the offseason.Robby Gordon jumped the Ford ship and sidled up to Gillette-Evernham Motorsports (GEM) last week, particularly for the marketing/sponsorship opportunies the Dodge team can bring to the table.BAM Racing and Petty Enterprises both receive engines and technical assistance from GEM.DALE EARNHARDT Inc.

New battle at Queen's Park: punctuation

The hallways of Queen's Park have seen quite a few controversies over the years, but none like this.

"Look, it just boggles the mind," Kormos said in trying to describe the issue.

The problem is one of punctuation.

Last Friday, Kormos was in his office when a worker came to change the sign on his office door.

According to Kormos, the title MPP wasn't punctuated properly. The lettering on the door said "M.P.P." while Queen's Park policy calls for the periods to be removed on all MPPs' offices throughout the entire building.

"I find out they've scheduled 45-60 person hours to this," said the MPP. "[You have to] shake your head and wonder who is prioritizing these types of issues."

Kormos sent a letter to the Speaker demanding to know why Queen's Park was spending money on something that seemed so frivolous.
