Howard Studley – BNP

HOWARD STUDLEY wants to see Harrow residents paying less council tax, and is keen to paint his party as supporting low tax.

The British National Party candidate, who has lived in Harrow all his life, thinks crime is a problem in Harrow.

He said: "There are more than a thousand crimes committed in Harrow every month, it's not one of the worst boroughs in London but the crime rate is high and none of the other parties are dealing with it."

Mr Studley, 62, who is a retired engineer, thinks bin collections are not good enough in the borough. He wants all recycling and waste collected every week.

He is also keen to dispel what he calls a misconception about the British National Party.

He said: "We offer local people a choice.

Coming of Age

Alexanders battles have long been a source of inspiration for filmmakers, notably Robert Rossen, who directed Richard Burton in Alexander The Great (1964). Conspiracy theorist writer-director Oliver Stone (JFK, Nixon) will give us his own take on Alexanders story in a film starring Colin Farrell and Angelina Jolie titled Alexander, currently in post-production; and pioneering director Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom, Moulin Rouge) re-teamed with his Romeo and Juliet star Leonardo DiCaprio in a rather risqué version of the conquerors trials and tribulations as a closet homosexual in Alexander The Great, slated for release in 2005.

HIH prison release imminent

HE has spent the past two-and-half years scrubbing toilets, but tomorrow HIH Insurance founder Ray Williams will wave goodbye to prison life.

The corporate crook, jailed with partner-in-crime Rodney Adler in 2005, will be released from Silverwater Jail at 9am.

By 10.30am, the 71-year-old will be holed up in his wife's $4 million harbourfront mansion, while many of the two million victims of Australia's biggest corporate collapse remain in financial strife.

Williams - who said he was "the most hated man in Australia" after the $5 billion HIH collapse - had hoped to slip quietly into retirement, but he will face a large media contingent outside jail.

His wife Rita had wanted to collect him from Silverwater jail in her Mercedes Benz but, like Lyndi Adler, has been warned of intense media interest.

Wine Festival 2008: Timeline of Wine Festival auction

Monte Ahuja got a steal for the 2009 Bentley Brooklands Coupe. After all, what's $450,000 compared to the $1.3 million he paid for a Bentley last year at the Naples Winter Wine Festival auction?

“This one is a bargain," said the part-time Naples businessman with a laugh. “The car was not something I planned on buying. I am going to have to find a place for it."

Trips and vehicles seemed to be the name of the game from 2 to 3 p.m. with the Bentley, a pair of Harley Davidson motorcycles and trips to Italy, Australia and New York on the items list.

David Becker had a Harley Davidson on order back home in Indianapolis. He said he wouldn't need it after purchasing two custom Harley Davidson motorcycles, Screaming Eagle wines and an eight-person trip to Napa Valley.

“The tour through Naples is going to be fabulous," he said.

Unstoppable Obama

The dollar is sinking. A growing proportion of Americans have no access to health care; an estimated 18,000 die every year for lack of health insurance. Now, as the economy staggers into recession, the financial analysts are wondering only whether the rest of the world is sufficiently "de-coupled" from the US economy to survive our demise.

Clinton can put forth all the policy proposals she likes–and many of them are admirable ones–but anyone can see that she's of the same generation and even one of the same families that got us into this checkmate situation in the first place. True, some people miss Bill, although the nostalgia was severely undercut by his anti-Obama rhetoric in South Carolina, or maybe they just miss the Internet bubble he happened to preside over.

Lawyer: Japan Should Avoid Slay Case

Given that this case has been closed in Japan, the Justice Ministry and Japanese police should no longer have to respond to requests from the police for evidence or to cooperate with the investigation," said Miuri's lawyer, Shinichiro Hironaka.

Miura and his wife were visiting Los Angeles on Nov. 18, 1981, when they were shot in a parking lot. Miura was hit in the right leg, while his 28-year-old wife was shot in the head. The shooting caused an international uproar, in part because he blamed the attack on robbers, reinforcing Japanese perceptions of America as violent.

The arrest came after cold-case detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department worked with authorities in Saipan and in Guam, police said in a statement. Police did not make details on the arrest available.
