Driver departures mean changes for NASCAR and the fans

Goodbye Dale Jarrett. Hello Juan Pablo Montoya.

NASCAR's old guard is fast disappearing, making way for a cadre of hot, young driving stars.

Bill Elliott and Mark Martin are only racing part time these days. Dale Jarrett plans to retire after the first five races, and Sterling Marlin might be forced to find a rocking chair if he can't find a full-time ride.

Longtime fan favorite Darrell Waltrip retired after the 2000 season, and Rusty Wallace, Terry Labonte and Ricky Rudd have since followed.

So, where does that leave the millions of fans who rooted for those drivers, joined their fans clubs and bought their souvenirs?

"I talk to a lot of fans, and they say, 'You were the guy I pulled for. I don't like some of the new stuff going on, and I just don't watch no more,'" said Wallace, who remains part of the sport as a team owner in the Nationwide Series and a commentator for ESPN/ABC broadcasts.

Verdict

The price-to-performance ratio of the Gateway FPD1975W seems a bit unfavourable to me. A built-in adjustable stand and bundled DVI cable would make it a better value.

Miller, Sabres blank Panthers

I mean I've had 20 of those (scoring chances) already this year and that's the first one I got in. So, it was nice but, like I said, I'm more worried about winning. That's three in a row and we'll go for four in Atlanta."

Tomas Vokoun stopped 40-of-41 shots for the Panthers, who have dropped two straight and six of eight overall. Florida played its 29th one-goal game of the season, falling to 13-11-5.

The Panthers, though in fourth place, remain just five points back of idle Carolina for first place in the Southeast Division.

In the dying seconds of the first period, Florida's Richard Zednik was sent to the penalty box for a holding the stick infraction. The power play carried over to the middle frame, where the Sabres took full advantage.

Vokoun stopped Jason Pominville's blast from the point, but Vanek scooped up the rebound and deposited the puck in the back of the net 40 seconds into the frame.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- One down, one to go for The Captain. Roger Penske picked up his elusive Daytona 500 victory, a $1 million bonus and a new challenge - pairing the race he just conquered with the one that means the most to him.

Ryan Newman gave Penske his first Daytona 500 victory in 24 years of trying, a frustrating span for a car owner accustomed to dominating big events: He's won the Indianapolis 500 a record 14 times.

Now he wants one more. Matching victories in two of motorsports' most sought after bounties.

"Comparing it to the Indy 500, as Ryan knows, we've been open-wheel guys and coming down here has been tough," Penske said following Sunday's victory. "This has got to go to the top of the charts here, this win. What I'm going to try to do this year is have them back-to-back, have one in May, too.

Jimmy happy to pass 'tough test'

It was a very, very tough test for us but we didn't help ourselves.

"We were slack with our passing, we weren't making angles and for some strange reason we looked sluggish. But that's all credit to Hamilton, they closed us down quickly.

"At half-time we were lucky to be still 0-0. If we had gone behind, it was very difficult, but it would have been even more difficult."

Reid felt the defeat had been "cruel" but admitted they had enough chances to win the game.

He said: "We made numerous chances, but if you don't take your chances you are punished and we were punished by Aberdeen.

"We had a one-on-one chance at the end with James Grady running through, normally James would have put that away.

"I'm majorly disappointed, I thought we could have won the game, never mind getting a draw.

US goes cloud cuckoo with PNR again

THE US IS making unreasonable demands for yet more personal information about airline passengers, the Europeans said yesterday.

It is only six months since a long disagreement between the US Department of Homeland Security and European privacy wonks was settled in a compromise deal that tempered the US' insatiable hunger for data.

Jonathan Faull, director general of the European Commission's justice directorate, said in a technical briefing about the EU's own border defences that the US was going "too far".

"The text is unacceptable. It's just way beyond anything that can be done," he said in Brussels reports.

The last spat was exacerbated by the Usonian habit of settling its bilateral arrangements unilaterally. It sent a memo telling the EU how their arrangement over the exchange of passenger name records (PNR) would operate.

I-Team on the scene in Washington (Live Blog)

You're one of my heroes. It's hard to believe."

Rep. Christopher Shays (R-Conn.) referred to McNamee as a drug dealer.

"That's your opinion," said McNamee.

"Tell me how it's legal to do illegal things. You were dealing drugs," said Shays.

2:22 P.M.: As Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) began her remarks, a staffer placed a large poster behind her that depicted four photos of Roger Clemens pitching at various points in his career - a photo of him in a Red Sox uniform circa "1995-'96" according to Foxx; a photo when Clemens pitched for Toronto around 1998; a photo between 2000-02 when the Rocket was with the Yankees and a photo between 2004-06 when Clemens was with his hometown Astros.

"It doesn't appear to me that your size has changed that much.

Jeff Thelen's Blog

No...were you wrong? No...there is no right or wrong answer to this question. It all depends on who you are sitting near. I don't think there is a rule book on how to act in a theater, just common sense and not be disruptive during the movie.

The one thing I would say is "yes" people shouldn't jump the gun by "shhhing" you. But! Some people don't know when to stop...and it ruins the first part of the movie as you don't want to get in a "tussle" once it's started. I think the person was just enacting a "ounce of prevention". However, maybe it was the WAY it was said...which is 80% of the message. To me, it's like being quiet in a library:whether people are sitting and doing nothing or reading...it's expected people will use hushed tones when they enter the building, right?

Jeff,As long as someone doesn't talk during the movie--which is really annoying--there is no problem with talking prior to the movie.
