| Sampson dialed for dollars
I report these things so that they don't drift past in a vapor or creep under the radar and somehow become the unremarked-upon norm. Sooners athletic director Joe Castiglione said, ''Bob Stoops is worth every penny and always has been and always will be.'' Forget the near-biblical proportions of that statement and ponder the cash. Six million dollars. To be, as Bo Schembechler once put it, ''the old whistle-tooter.'' It's hard for me to, as they say, wrap my arms around that. Castiglione justified the payout by saying that Stoops has brought a lot of income and excitement to the school. ''The people who are generating the revenue, why on earth wouldn't they share in it?'' Castiglione explained.

Wood Brothers No. 21 back on track after missing Daytona
After failing to qualify for the Daytona 500 for only the third time in 50 years, the Wood Brothers famed No. 21 is back on track for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race. "I came out of Daytona pretty down," said Len Wood, co-owner of the pioneer stock car team. "But we found a couple of issues concerning qualifying and the 150-miler about why we didn't make it, so that we feel better about coming here. "If we had missed two in a row, like (brother and team co-owner) Eddie (Wood) said, you can't quit and you can't panic, but you certainly would've been questioning yourself." Since their car finished outside the top 35 last year, the Woods have to try to qualify on speed. But rain on Friday made qualifying a moot question this week, with driver Bill Elliott getting the Wood Brothers into the race on a former series champion's provisional.
Knight recalls his days playing against Chiefs
The 6-foot-1 native of Toronto spent last season playing 32 games for Merano, Italy. He had six goals, 22 points and 84 penalty minutes."He didn't enjoy his experience for the most part and wanted to get back to North America," Herbers said.Knight, who turned 23 on Sunday, wants to re-establish himself with the Chiefs."I wanted to give myself a second chance here and see how far I could go in North America," he said. Two years ago, Knight split the ECHL season between Greenville (33 games) and Toledo (20 games). In the regular-season finale at the War Memorial, he netted a game-tying goal against Johnstown's Morgan Cey. The overtime contest eventually stretched to a shootout that Toledo won to clinch the North Division regular-season crown and home ice in the playoffs. After then-coach Frank Anzalone's Chiefs swept Trenton in the opening round, Johnstown traveled to Toledo, dropping the first two games of a best-of-5 series, 3-2 and 4-1.
Cars and curries: Salmond in ‘brotherhood of naan’
The failure of the First Minister's diet plans is laid horribly bare in the latest information disclosure which shows him taking limousines several times a day, and regularly to his favourite curry house, the Raj restaurant in Edinburgh. A spokesman for Mr Salmond admitted he was "a big fan of the brotherhood of naan" but insisted car use was no higher under the current administration than the last. In his first six months in office, Mr Salmond used government limousines around 1700 times, and every journey is detailed in the latest official disclosure from the government. .
